Choose the right products. You wouldn’t choose a skincare product that wasn’t made for your individual skin type, and you shouldn’t choose a hair care product that’s not specifically designed for your hair’s needs. Color-treated hair needs special products designed not only for your hair type but also for keeping your color in place for as long as possible. Your stylist’s recommendations are best to follow here, as only your stylist understands your hair’s needs. 

Wash infrequently. The more you wash your hair, the more likely that some of that vibrant color gets washed down the drain. Even people without color-treated hair tend to wash too often because it interferes with the balance of your hair’s natural oils. Most pros recommend washing only once or twice per week, with a dry shampoo used between washes to keep your hair smelling fresh. 

Condition often. On the other hand, conditioning isn’t something you want to skip, especially if you have color-treated hair. Use a deep conditioner at least once a week and ask your stylist about the best conditioning product to use in between washes, without feeling like build-up. Hydration is crucial for keeping your hair color looking its best. 

Avoid the heat. Again, most people subject their hair to too much heat, even people without color-treated hair. The more heat exposure, the more opportunity for damage, which will make any hair look dry, dull and frizzy. Avoid styles that require daily exposure to heated styling tools, if possible, and take warm showers instead of hot ones for less heat to damage your hair.
