Preparing Your Skin for Makeup Application

Applying your makeup can be complicated, but knowing how to apply it properly can enhance your best features, while hiding your least favorite. For the best results, you should start with a skin care routine. Cleaning and moisturizing your skin regularly will prep your skin. We’ll give you a few tips on how to prepare your skin before applying makeup.

Start with a clean slate. Washing your face prior to applying makeup gets rid of dirt, bacteria and oils that can clog your pores. You’ll want to purchase a facial cleanser that’s the right pH for your skin. If you have dry skin, choose a product with a low pH, such as 4 or 5. Oily skin, or skin that’s prone to have acne breakouts would benefit a cleanser with the pH of 6 or 7. It’s also beneficial to your skin to exfoliate at least once a week.

After cleansing your face, you’ll want to apply a moisturizer. It’s best to use one that has an SPF, this will protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. If you haven’t found a moisturizer that works well for your face, there are some simple guidelines you can follow to decide on which is best. An ointment works well for very dry or elderly skin, it has high moisture and will even soothe rashes and cuts. A cream is best for drier skin types or during the winter. Night cream is best to wear at night to fight aging and for use during the winter or for elderly skin. Lotions work well on almost any skin type and leaves a non-shiny finish. There are serums that can target specific skin conditions. For a dewy fresh-looking face use a face mist during the day, it provides vitamins, moisture and a fragrance.

If you have fine lines or wrinkles, a silicone-based skin primer is perfect for filling in these lines and smoothing out the face. Apply by pressing very small dots on your skin. And, your skin is now ready for makeup application.
